A Field Guide to the u type butterfly valve

If you work in water, HVAC, or light process lines, you already know the wafer-style butterfly is the everyday workhorse. The U Type Butterfly Valve from Thriveon (made in South of Huanmadian Village Town, Ningjin County, Xingtai, Hebei Province, China) is essentially a wafer type design—compact, easy to align, surprisingly rugged. To be honest, many customers say they choose it because it “just fits and seals,” which sounds simple, but that’s the point.

What’s trending (and why it matters)

Across utilities and OEM skids, we’re seeing four themes: decarbonization (lighter valves mean smaller actuators), aggressive water reuse (seats that tolerate chloramines), faster commissioning (ISO 5211 top flanges for drop-on actuators), and documentation that passes audits. The u type butterfly valve sits right in that sweet spot: compact, resilient-seated, and built for PN10/16 or Class 150 lines without drama.

Key specifications at a glance

Size range DN50–DN1200 (≈2”–48”), real-world availability may vary by build
Body Ductile iron (EN-GJS-450-10) with fusion-bonded epoxy ≈250 μm
Disc Stainless 304/316 or DI with epoxy/Ni-plated options
Seat EPDM, NBR, or PTFE-lined; ISO 5208 Rate A (bubble-tight), API 598 seat test
Pressure / Temp PN10/16 or Class 150; -10 to 120°C (EPDM), around 0 to 80°C (NBR), PTFE for higher chemicals
Standards API 609 Cat A, EN 593; Face-to-face ISO 5752 Series 20; Flanges EN 1092-1 PN10/16, ASME B16.5 Class 150
Testing Shell 1.5× rated, seat 1.1×; cycle test ≈10,000+ on typical DN100
Actuation Lever, gearbox, pneumatic or electric; ISO 5211 top flange

Where it’s used

  • Municipal water and tertiary filtration skids
  • HVAC chilled and condenser loops (quick shutoff, low ΔP)
  • Desalination pretreatment (EPDM seat + 316 disc is common)
  • Food & beverage utilities (non-contact services)
  • Fire water branch lines and bypasses

Why spec this style

  • Lightweight wafer profile reduces flange bolt count and install time
  • Bubble-tight resilient seat (nice insurance on test day)
  • Good torque-to-seal balance; smaller actuators in many sizes
  • Cost-effective for large diameters vs. gate or ball valves

Process and QA (how it’s built)

Materials are cast DI bodies, CNC-machined faces, grit-blasted, then coated with FBE. Discs are polished; stems in SS410/431. Seats are molded and compression-fitted. Every u type butterfly valve is hydrostatically tested per API 598 and EN 12266-1. Torque and leakage are logged; coating thickness is spot-checked (DFT gauge). Typical service life is 10–20 years in treated water, realistically depending on media and cycling.

Customization

Seat compound (EPDM potable, NBR hydrocarbon vapors, PTFE for chemicals), disc metallurgy, gear with padlock, extended stem for insulation, and paint systems for coastal air. Documentation packs (ISO 9001, MTC 3.1, pressure tests) are available; WRAS or ACS can be discussed for specific seat batches.

Vendor snapshot (what buyers compare)

Vendor Lead time Customization Certs/Docs Relative Price
Thriveon (China) ≈3–5 weeks High (materials, seats, actuators) ISO 9001, test dossiers Value
Global Brand A ≈4–8 weeks Medium Broad portfolio Premium
Local Trader B Stock-dependent Low Basic Low–Mid

Quick case notes

Desal pretreatment skids, MEA: DN150–DN300 units with 316 discs and EPDM seats handled sodium hypochlorite dosing; zero visible seat leakage at 1.1× pressure per API 598 during FAT. Operators liked the compact gearboxes.

District cooling retrofit, SE Asia: Swapping aging wafer valves for u type butterfly valve units cut actuator size by one frame on average and shaved ≈6% off installed cost due to easier alignment.

Customer feedback

“Seat compression felt even, no weeping on first charge.” “Docs were clean; hydro charts matched stamped ratings.” Small comments, big relief on commissioning day.
